Obituary

David Lee Green, 68, of Winthrop passed away heroically on June 26, 2021. His unselfish valor saved many lives. David was born and raised in Winthrop, Massachusetts.

David graduated from Winthrop High School in 1972 with academic honors and was a member of the legendary 17-1 basketball team, coached by Henry McCarthy. He was respected and loved by his classmates. Upon graduation, he would enlist in the Air Force, serving honorably as a Military Police Officer for four years in Vietnam and Thailand. David Green would then spend 36 years in law enforcement starting in 1980 with the Metropolitan District Commission and then becoming a Massachusetts State Trooper in 1992 when the MDC merged with the MSP. Officer Green also attended Cambridge College nights earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.

David had great character, strove for excellence in his life and was the best that humanity can offer. His actions saved other people’s lives and he was heroic. He was as modest and self-effacing as he was courageous. David touched so many people’s lives in a positive way. Once you met David Green you had a friend for life.

David’s dignified parents Ray and Ruth Green predeceased him and were very proud of Dave and his brother Ray. They would instill the importance of education and hard work in their children. Dave looked up to his older brother Aria Ray, who was a National Honor Society Student at WHS and a former Massachusetts State Gymnastics Champion being accepted by Cornell, Stanford, and eventually choosing gymnastics power Penn State.

His mother’s brothers Orantun, Roosevelt, and Clarence Shearer preceded David in death. Dave is survived by his loving brother, retired Tampa Fire Department Chief Aria Ray and his wife Wylene of Tampa, Florida. Many adoring first cousins from his mother’s family, the Shearer’s, Charles in New Jersey, Donald, Melvin, Marylee, Betsy from Georgia, and Earl and Jenette from Chicago. His elderly Aunt Genevieve{Shearer} of Georgia. Also, his extended family Bill and Norma Leach of Winthrop. William Maloney, Dave’s God daughter Lauren Elisabeth Baxter and husband Nate, and children Marin and Sadi from Maine. Tsiotos Family of Winthrop. His fellow State Trooper Family MSP Superintendent Col. Christopher Mason noted that “Trooper David Green more than upheld the ideals of integrity, professionalism, and service to others that are the hallmarks of a great Trooper.”

Visiting Hours will be held from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home 210 Winthrop Street, Winthrop, on Friday July 2nd, from 10:00AM-1:00PM, followed by burial in the Winthrop Cemetery, in Winthrop, Massachusetts at 1:30PM. Relatives and friends are invited. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in David Green’s name.
