Obituary

Limerick - Emery Frank Patten, 90, of Limerick passed away of old age on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

He was born to Frank Emery and Adeline (Connolly) Patten on October 14, 1930 in Portland. Emery graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School in 1949, where he starred on the Capers baseball team. While in high school he and his classmates were involved with the rescue of the collier ship "Oakey L. Alexander" off the coast of the cape during a brutal northeaster on March 3, 1947.

Emery was drafted into the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and served for over three and a half years, mostly stationed in England where he met his future wife Kathleen. Upon his discharge and Kate's immigration, they were wed in September of 1954 at the Patten family home in Cape Elizabeth. This ceremony was performed by candle light due to the power outage caused by Hurricane Edna.

In 1967 Emery and Kathleen founded Sterling Nursery School in Sterling, Mass. After 54 years this business is still providing excellent pre-school child care for children under the leadership of their daughter Darlene.

Kathleen passed away in 1991 and Emery was remarried to Beverlea Boyns who passed away in 2020. Emery and Bev had moved back to Maine and resettled in Limerick. He was employed at the Spurwink School, also in Limerick, until his retirement in 2005.

Emery is survived by his brother Donnie and his family of Gorham, his sister Diane of Buxton, sons Michael and Stephen, daughters Darlene, Mary and Kim; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The Patten family would like to thank the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House as well as several medical facilities and organizations throughout southern Maine for their compassionate and professional care throughout the years.

A graveside service in Limerick will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are respectfully handled by Poitras, Neal and York Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at: www.mainefuneral.com

Any volunteer donations may be made to: Friends of Feral Felines, PO Box 8137, Portland, ME 04104. This was Emery's most beloved charity.
