Obituary

LOWELL Patricia A. ‘Pat’ (Whittaker) Montgomery, 69 of Lowell, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at her home. She was the beloved wife of Robert W. Montgomery Jr., with whom she would have celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on June 29, 2021.

She was born in Lowell on March 17, 1952 and was the daughter of the late Paul Whittaker and the late Helen (Moynihan) Whittaker. She was raised in Lowell where she attended area schools, graduating from St. Margaret’s School, Keith Hall, Lowell State College, and finally Fitchburg State College with her Master’s Degree. Pat was an avid reader and lifelong learner, setting an example for all that she loved.

Pat made her home in the Highlands section of Lowell where she was a communicant of St. Margaret of Scotland Church. She devoted her life to being an educator in Lowell, teaching elementary school at St. Michael’s, the Bartlett, and the Murkland for over 35 years. She enjoyed teaching with a genuine passion, delighting in the growth of her students, her children, her grandchildren, and anyone else she decided could use an earful of wisdom.

A child of Lowell, Pat would bring a smile or a laugh to everyone’s face, fill your belly with her inherited baking and cooking skills, or a groan as she wiped the floor with you in a colorfully worded game of 45’s. Pat was a consummate entertainer, hosting countless holiday parties, and wouldn’t let her guests leave without four extra days of food. If there was a singular point of focus in her later years, it was certainly her grandchildren, whom she adored unequivocally and with all of her heart.

In addition to her husband, Robert Montgomery of Lowell, she is survived by her son, Robert W. Montgomery III and his wife, Michelle of Lowell; her daughter, Colleen Delaney and her wife, Lauren of Stoneham. Her five grandchildren are Evelyn Montgomery, Nico Delaney, Hunter Delaney, Lila Montgomery, and Declan Delaney. Her brother Tom and wife Eileen Whittaker of Connecticut, MaryAnn Whittaker of Nashua NH, Kevin and Brenda Richardson of Lowell, Jim and Carol Ann Lake of Dracut, and Paul Couture of Dracut all remember her fondly. She is also remembered by her many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers Paul and Frank Whittaker, as well as her sister in law Janice Couture, and lifelong friend Catherine O’Brien.
