John J. McCaigue, Sr.
Retired Cargill Oil Company Foreman


TEWKSBURY: John J. McCaigue, Sr., age 73, a resident of Tewksbury for 25 years, passed away peacefully at the High Pointe Hospice House in Haverhill on Thursday, June 17, 2021, after a short battle with lung cancer.

He was the beloved husband of the late Marjorie (Symonds) McCaigue, who passed away in 1979.

Born in Cambridge on January 5, 1948, he was the son of the late Robert McCaigue and the late Sabina (Szulewski) McCaigue.

John was raised in Cambridge, and attended Cambridge Ringe & Latin High School.

In 1967, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. He was awarded several decorations for his active-duty service including the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the M-14 Expert Badge.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a Foreman by the Cargill Oil Company.

John served as a coach for the Tewksbury Youth Girls Softball League for five years. During the 1988- 1989 season, he coached the “Bruins” softball team which won the league championship.

In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, playing golf, making jewelry, watching professional wrestling and was an avid Boston Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics and New England Patriots fan.

John is survived by his children, Jean M. Bettencourt and her husband Michael, and John J. McCaigue, Jr. and Carolyn McCaigue McDonald, all of Tewksbury; three grandchildren, Austin and Kayla McCaigue, and Mia Bettencourt. He was the brother of Robert McCaigue and his wife Jill of Wareham, Joan Viola and her late husband Charles of Woburn, Helen Munro and her husband Kenneth of Burlington, and the late Ann Cherubino. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Calling hours are Wednesday, June 23, from 4-7 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. His funeral procession will begin Thursday, June 24, at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Williams Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. Flowers are welcomed. The floral tributes received will be donated in John’s memory to the Power of Flowers Project based in Tewksbury.
