Cecilia I. Cardinal, 90, widow of Arthur S. Cardinal, a former resident of BenMont Avenue, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at Mystic Manor Convalescent Home in Mystic following a long illness.
Born in Schenectady, N.Y., on Feb. 4, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Josephine (Piorkowska) Brodeski. Mrs. Cardinal had always celebrated her birthday on February 20th, the date of her baptism. She received her education in the Hoosick Falls, New York schools.
Ceil and Art were married in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., on Aug. 1, 1936. Mr. Cardinal died July 30, 2000.
In earlier years Ceil was employed at several knitting mills in the area. In 1969 she opened Ceil's Beauty Shop and operated this business until her retirement in 1982.
Mrs. Cardinal was a member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church. She was also a former member of the Bennington Club and the Vermont State Hairdressers Association. Although blind for several years she loved knitting and continued to knit until shortly before her death.
The family wishes to extend their everlasting gratitude to the staff of Mystic Manner for the kind and gentle care that they gave to both Ceil and Art during the years that they resided there.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Joseph Badagliacco, of Niantic, a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley A. and Dianne Cardinal, of Stonington; two granddaughters and their families, Kimberly Piscatelli, her husband Mark and their children, Sarah, Nicholas and Nathan of East Hampton, and Jennifer Hardy, her husband John and their daughter Grace of Stonington; a sister, Regina Brodeski, of Hoosick Falls and a brother, Edmund Brodeski of Cornwall, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband Mrs. Cardinal was predeceased by a sister and brother, Helen and Cazmer Brodeski.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, Bennington VT on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered.
Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm when the family will be in attendance.
Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Cecilia Cardinal may be made to either the Mystic Manor Convalescent Home Recreation Fund.
The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic, is assisting the family with local arrangements.
