Obituary

Worcester- Veronica E. ( Doyle) Fontaine, 96 of Fairfax, VA and formerly of Worcester, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2020 after a brief illness.
Mrs. Fontaine was married to the late Edward P. Fontaine and is survived by her two daughters, Cathy Scarbeau and her husband Brian of Ashburn, VA, Lisa Fontaine and her husband Phil Vater of Ames, IA.
Also survived by two granddaughters and one grandson, Erin Gross and her husband Kenneth, Shannon Scarbeau and her partner, Scott Johnson, Steven Scarbeau and his fiancée, Cheryl Krolikiewicz. Also survived by two great- grandchildren, Sophia Gross and Oliver Gross and several nieces and two nephews.
Veronica was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Thomas and Beatrice (Keegan) Doyle and is also predeceased by two sisters, Frances Doyle and Margaret Davies.
Mrs. Fontaine worked for many years as a proofreader and typesetter at Stobbs Press and LaVigne Press. She was a longtime member of St. Stephen’s Church in Worcester. A lifelong lover of learning, she decided in retirement to take advantage of Worcester State University’s Free Elder Courses, through which she received her bachelor’s degree in English from Worcester State College in 2000 at the age of 76. She sang in the Worcester State University’s Choir for many years.
Veronica was devoted to making the world a better place and participated in several community-based initiatives well into her nineties. Her volunteer work included many projects with RSVP, third grade reader at Rice Square School, Habitat for Humanity, English language tutor for the Worcester Public Library and a dispatcher for Rachel’s Table, a transport service that delivers excess food to local shelters and pantries.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday, June 21, 2021 at 10 AM in St. Stephen’s Church, 357 Grafton St. Worcester. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester. Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Fontaine may be made to Rachel’s Table 633 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
