John E. Bartels, 91, of Wendell Comrie Road, Ledyard, formerly of Broad Brook, CT and Fair Lawn, NJ, died Thursday at Beechwood Manor.
Mr. Bartels was born in New York City on September 29, 1914 the son of John and Emily M. Terhune Bartels. After receiving his education, he served in the US Army Signal Corps. During World War II &Korea where he was part of the effort to build the Alaskan Highway.
He was married to Mary (Harrington) Bartels in Alberta, Canada on October 30, 1943. She died in September, 1990.
Mr. Bartels is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Johnson of Ledyard; two grandchildren, Richard J. Johnson and Erin E. Johnson, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Harold Bartels and Marian Henderson.
His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Tuesday from 4-7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick Church, Mystic on Wednesday at 11am.
Burial will be in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Broad Brook, CT.
