Obituary

Walter W. Murphy, age 85, of East Bridgewater, died May 22, 2021 at his home. He was born and raised in Brockton, a son of the late Edward J. and Flora (Alberts) Murphy. He grew up on the Eastside and attended Brockton Schools. He lived in East Bridgewater for five years, and prior to that in Halifax.

Walter was the Founder and President of The Today Association (nonprofit organization) in West Bridgewater. He was a friend of Bill W. with 48 years of sobriety. He was an inspiration to many.

Walter was a generous man who would do anything for anyone while expecting nothing in return. His door was always open, no matter who you were. He loved spending time outdoors by the water. He especially loved being at the Today Association clubhouse with family and friends enjoying cookouts, playing games, and socializing with much laughter. Family was everything to him. He was always coming up with ways for everyone to spend time together.

Walter is survived by his loving children, Mary Dingman of Carver, Mark Murphy and his wife Susan of San Raphael, CA, James Greaver of Phoenix, AZ, Marlene Greaver of Las Vegas, NV, Marilyn Greaver of Salt Lake City, UT, Rebecca Stone of NY, and Jen McClaren of Bridgewater; grandchildren, Walter and Desiree Chivers, Floyd Dingman, Ashley Cummings, Ross McCormack, Matthew, Tyler, and Kaytlyn Murphy, Brittany Dutra, Jesse and Justin Wright, Trista-Lea Glore, Joshua and Jared Poole, Jasamine Loewenstein, Haven and Will Maeser, James, John and Daniel McClaren, and Ainsley Stone. He also leaves behind his former wife, Cheryl Baldwin Murphy, as well as many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughters Linda Cummings and Laurie McCormack; grandsons Jesse Cummings and Wayne Cummings, Jr.; and siblings Edward J. Murphy, Jr, Leo Murphy, Joseph Murphy, Robert Murphy, Marguerite Mousette, Marie Dmitruk, and Catherine Bates.

A Celebration of Walter’s life will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 429 Monponsett St., Hanson, MA (Rte 58) Saturday, June 19, 2021, 10am-12pm.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in his name be made to Chaplin Danny Croce, New Hope Correctional Ministry at prisonfellowship.org
