Obituary

Mary Theresa Bernadette (Winn) Day passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on, May 17, 2021, after a long illness. Mary was the beloved wife of Joseph P. Day, Jr. to whom she was married for 59 years.

She was the daughter of the late Francis X. Winn and Catherine (Curran) Winn of Woburn. Mary was a graduate of St. Charles Borromeo School, Mt. Ida College and St. Luke’s School of Nursing. She worked for decades as a Registered Nurse, caring for students in the Woburn school system, and generations of workers at the former Atlantic Gelatin in Woburn and at the Gillette plant in North Andover. Mary loved her work and was treasured by every one of her patients and colleagues.

Mary was the life of every party and those who had the good fortune of being in her company knew that they were in the presence of a very special woman. Everyone who met her walked away smiling and feeling better about the world. She and Joe were highly sought-after guests at every type of social event. Mary went to great lengths to make others laugh and feel welcome, with her knowing wink a tell-tale sign that she was succeeding. Her sense of humor, her cascading laugh and her boundless kindness brought immeasurable joy to family, friends and strangers alike.

Mary was the loving and much-loved mother of: Tracy Day and her husband Brian Greene; Joseph “Joda” Day and his wife Dawn; Kerry Day; Francie Day Degen and her husband Matthew; Michael Day and his wife Megan; Megan Day Henaghan and her husband John; and the late Timothy Bernard Day. She was the proud grandmother of: Seamus, Devon, Murphy and Norah Degen; Caitlin, Jack, Kerry and Michaela Henaghan; Alec and Sophia Greene; Conor, Ryan and Finnegan Day; and Cecilia Day. Mary was the loving sister of Joan (Winn) McElheney and her late husband Paul McElheney of Woburn. She also leaves behind scores of family members. She will be terribly missed by all.
