Obituary

STANDISH – Francis John Sibley, 86, of Burlington, Maine, passed away May 7, 2021, at his son’s home in Standish, ME, surrounded by his children. He was born May 11, 1934 in Grand Falls Plantation, ME, to Alvah Leon and Marenia Frances (Hurd) Sibley.
 
He attended grade school in Grand Falls and graduated from Lee Academy class of 1953, where he was part of the 1953 State Champion Cross Country Team.  Francis married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Diana (Sibley) Sibley on July 3, 1953. They moved to southern Maine in 1956, and settled for many years in Scarborough. Francis was employed in the steel business for many years with Bancroft & Martin and East Coast Steel in South Portland. Francis and Dorothy camped, boated, and fished throughout Maine, and traveled the USA extensively. After retirement, Francis and Dorothy returned to their roots in Burlington for the summer season and wintered in Florida.
 
Francis was preceded in death by his beloved wife Dorothy; his parents; a beloved daughter Brenda Joy (Sibley) Glidden; a daughter-in-law Rosemary Althea (Carr) Sibley and a granddaughter, Amelia Violet Sibley.  Francis was part of a large family and he was preceded in death by his siblings Thelma Leona Harriman and William; Woodrow Bliss Sibley and Mavis; Franklin Durmont Sibley; Hortense Emma Farrington and Jasper; Alvah Leon Sibley and Eva; Carolyn Marilyn Boyington and Fred; Shirley Mary Campbell and Lauren and brothers-in-law Jerome Zinkle, Jimmy Stone, Alfred Stropparo and Richard Sibley; and sisters-in-law, Mary Lorraine (Buraby) Sibley and Lynn (Daniels) Sibley.
 
Survivors include his son, Francis (Abe) Sibley Jr. of Standish, ME; and his daughter, Sandra Sibley of Standish, ME; his sister Kathleen Zinkle of Carnation WA, his brothers-in-law, Philip Sibley Jr. and Dora (Jipson) Curtis of Lee ME; Dennis and Teresa (Bearce) Sibley of Burlington, ME and Clayton and Vickie (Guadana) Sibley of Red Oak TX; his sisters-in-law, Vivian Stone of Lexington, NC; Shelley Stropparo of Newcomerstown, OH and Nancy (Schwarm) Sibley of Burlington, ME as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews.
 
A graveside service and interment will be at Mount Repose Cemetery in Burlington, Maine, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Francis and Brenda's name to: The Neely House at Tufts Medical Center - 800 Washington Street, Box #0716, Boston, MA  02111
