Obituary

Jane (Horner Simmons Kennedy) Fairbrother
July 7, 1945-May 1, 2021

Jane Horner Simmons Kennedy Fairbrother died May 1, surrounded by loved ones after a long battle with cancer.

She is survived by her husband of 18 years, Charles Fairbrother; three children from her first marriage to Frederick F. Kennedy, Tara Lukila Kennedy, Lisa Meipala Kennedy and Eric Iukini Kale Kennedy; her stepchildren Chas, John (along with his wife Marlene); her three brothers Charles H. Simmons III (along with his wife Nancy), Col. Robert R. Simmons (along with his wife Heidi) and Tom S. Simmons; and 17 nieces and nephews; and 2 step-grandchildren.

Jane, the daughter of Charles H. Simmons, Jr and Roxane Ruhl Simmons, was born (July 7, 1945) and raised in Bedford, NY. A graduate of Chatham Hall and Western College, she spent a year in France learning how to cook before returning to the states and settling in Washington, DC in 1968. On July 4, 1970, she married Frederick F. Kennedy of Honolulu, Hawaii, raising their three children until his passing in 2001. While living there, she worked for St. John’s Church alongside Reverend John Harper (who had been at St Matthew’s Church in Bedford) and briefly for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. She spent almost three decades as a teacher and administrator at the National Presbyterian School.

After her marriage to Charles Fairbrother on June 28, 2003, she moved to eastern Connecticut working as a realtor, a volunteer with the Mystic Seaport, and a member of their Pilot Program. Jane also enjoyed being a member of the Calvary Church Bell Choir.

Her family and friends will remember her love of cooking and golf with fondness. Jane was also a passionate fan of football (particularly the Washington Football team), sailing, hockey, tennis and summers spent at the Wadawanuck Club.

A private memorial service will be held on May 22. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Stonington Free Library.
