Obituary

Raymond H. Marsden Jr.
May 2, 2021

In Taunton, Raymond H. Marsden Jr., Age 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a very brief illness. Ray is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Gail (Baptist) of Taunton. He was born in Taunton, the son of the late Raymond and June (Smith) Marsden. He was a lifelong resident of Taunton.

Ray graduated from Monsignor Coyle High School in 1963. After a brief stop at Boston University and serving his country in the United States Army, Ray began what would become his life’s work in the newspaper business beginning at the Taunton Daily Gazette and then 43 years at The Boston Globe. Ray was a talented compositor who was able to adapt from the original lead type settings of the industry’s heyday to the digital media we see today. Although he was very dedicated to his work, he always knew his most important titles were “Husband”, “Dad”, and “Boopa”. He was a kind, quiet man that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

For many years Ray enjoyed summer vacations at White Horse Beach in Manomet and began to visit Harwich Port over the past few years. He also enjoyed visiting North Conway, NH in the fall and winter. He and Gail traveled to different parts of the Caribbean each spring and fall for the past 20 years.

Ray was an avid sports fan and shared season tickets for the New England Patriots with his son for the past 30 years. However, attending the baseball, basketball, lacrosse, and track events of his two grandchildren brought him the most joy.

In addition to his wife, Ray leaves his son, Jeffrey J. Marsden and his wife Joan and their children Thomas and Julia of Norfolk, MA, his brother, John Marsden of Onset, MA, and his aunt, Audrey Brady of North Haverhill, NH.

The family would like to thank the Morton Hospital ICU for their compassionate care.
