Marguerite J. “Peggy” Keene, 81
Dateline: Chartley, MA

Marguerite J. “Peggy” (Dion) Keene, age 81, of the Chartley section of Norton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at Hope Health Hulitar Hospice Care in Providence, RI surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of retired Norton Police Chief Benton W. Keene, Jr. to whom she was married for 63 years.

Born in Attleboro, MA on July 31,1939 she was the loving daughter of the late Marcel and Diane (Provençal) Dion and loving daughter-in-law of the late Benton and Rose (Cummins) Keene.

Peggy grew up in Norton and was educated in the Norton Public School System.
After raising her six children, she returned to work at the Chartley Post Office, where she became the Postmaster. Following 20 years of faithful service, she retired to enjoy time with her family.

Peggy’s adoring family, whom she loved dearly, were truly the focal point of her life. She enjoyed spending time and many summers with her children and grandchildren at their second home in the White Mountains of New Hampshire

Peggy will always be remembered for her family dinners, teaching her grandchildren how to bake, especially her chocolate chip cookies and apple pie among other things. She loved hiking in her earlier years, traveling with her husband, fishing with her children and grandchildren, and knitting and crocheting many things for family and friends. At the time of her death, she was anticipating the birth of 2 additional great grandchildren.

The Keene family would like to extend a special thanks to the ICU at Sturdy Memorial Hospital for the exceptional care and comfort given to Peggy.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her devoted children: Norton Deputy Fire Chief Benton Keene III and wife Michelle of Attleboro, Guy Keene and wife Laura of Norton, Richard Keene and wife Joann of Attleboro, Bryan Keene and wife Roseanne of Norton, Cheryl Liddell and husband Robert of Rehoboth, and Sandra Freedman and husband Daniel of Norton. She was the dear sister of Norman Dion of Tennessee, Carol Frietas and her husband Philip of Virginia and the late Beatrice Miller, Gertrude Vacher, Donald Dion, and Denise Lavasseur. She was the sister-in- law of Robert Eddleston Sr. of Norton and his late wife Janice, who recently passed away on April 13th, A. Thomas Keene and his wife Sharon of North Attleboro and the late Susan Wilson. She is also survived by her 16 cherished grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, as well as her many loving nieces and nephews. She will also be greatly missed by her dog Tinker and her best friend for many years Janice Wilson.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, April 30th from 1:00-3:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Avenue) Norton.

A service in celebration of Peggy’s life will be held at the conclusion of visitation at 3:00 P.M. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Peggy’s memory may be made to the Hope Health Hulitar Hospice Center, 1085 North Main St., Providence, Rhode Island 02904.
