Obituary

GILLESPIE Bernard E. Longtime resident of Roslindale passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on April 17, 2021. Beloved husband of the late Nellie (Mugford) Gillespie. Devoted father of Frederick Gillespie of Royalston, MA., Deborah Bryson of Needham, Doreen Edmunds and her husband Robert of Framingham, and the late Michael Gillespie and his surviving wife Eleanor of Marshfield. Loving grandfather of Lori, Robbie, Caitlin, Emma, Melissa, Sam, Elizabeth, Caleigh, Emmie, and Luke and great-grandfather of Alison, Connor, Petra, Harper, and Leo. Bernard was predeceased by 12 brothers and sisters. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

World War II Merchant Marine Veteran. After the war Bernard also served in the U.S. Army. Bernard did much in his life; he was a deep sea fisherman, tug boat captain, restaurant owner, and taxi business owner. Bernard was an avid world traveler, and sun-worshipper. Some of his favorite hot-spots include Hawaii, Florida, and Alaska.

Visiting hours at the P.E. Murray-F.J. Higgins, George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home 2000 Centre St. West Roxbury on Sunday, April 25th from 2-6pm. Bernard will be buried with military funeral honors at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne on Monday, April 26th at 10:45am (please go directly to the cemetery). In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Bernard’s memory to the Fisher House Foundation (Fisher House Boston’s mission is to provide a home away from home where military families can stay while a loved one is receiving medical care) 1400 VFW Parkway, West Roxbury, MA 02132.
