Obituary

CHICOPEE – Henry J. Betournay, 96, of the Aldenville section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Friday, April 9, 2021. He passed into Eternal Life at home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born at home in the Aldenville section of Chicopee on May 23, 1924, a beloved son of the late Joseph and Alma R. (Granger) Betournay. He was raised and educated in Chicopee and was a lifelong resident of Aldenville. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Aviation Ordnance Man (Aviation Turret Mechanic) Second Class. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theater Ribbon. He was employed as a machinist and inspector at the former B. F. Perkins in Chicopee. He was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling and had fun playing in the “Three Guys Bowling Team” with two of his brothers. During his leisure time, he enjoyed gardening and woodworking. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Barbara A. (Williams) Betournay. They were married on July 4, 1953 in the Saint Joan of Arc School Hall prior to the completion of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville and were blessed with over 67 years of happiness together. He also leaves his five loving daughters, Dolores R. “Dee” Rainey and her husband, Timothy, of Wortham, TX, Dr. Jeanne M. Betournay-Gamelli and her husband, James Gamelli, of West Springfield, Ruth A. Wehr and her husband, Mark, of Chicopee, Lori S. Costella and her husband, Richard, of Springfield and Cathy J. Thomas and her husband, Scott, of Holyoke; his 11 cherished grandchildren, Angela Chelf of Texas, Craig Rainey of Texas, Allison Gamelli and her husband, Greg Skop, of Westfield, Christopher Gamelli and his wife, Tiffany, of Southwick, Sarah Gamelli of West Springfield, Pamela Langlois and her husband, Doug, of Stafford Springs, CT, Zachary Wehr and his wife, Lindsey, of Athens, GA, Richy Costella of East Longmeadow, Robbie Costella and his wife, Sherry, of Grafton, MA, Nick Eckel and his wife, Abby, of Chicopee, and Ben Eckel and his wife, Patty, of Chicopee; his 14 cherished great-grandchildren, Drew Chelf, Logan Rainey, Haylie Gamelli, Jace Gamelli, Darren Langlois, Lily Langlois, Natalie Langlois, Aubree Costella, Lennon Costella, Nola Eckel, Hunter Eckel, Aubree Cornish, Ryder Eckel, and Brody Eckel; his dear sister, Estelle Tetrault of Granby; his two dear sisters-in-law, Rita Betournay of Chicopee and June Coburn of Texas; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Betournay and Williams families. In addition to his beloved parents, he was predeceased by his six dear brothers, Alfred “Bill” Betournay and his wife, Violette, Roland Betournay and his wife, Anna, Roger Betournay and his wife, Claire, Lucien “Curley” Betournay and his wife, Terry, Emile Betournay and Edward Betournay; his five dear sisters, Germaine Bourdreau and her husband, Edward, Gertrude Nadeau and her husband, Ralph, Blanche Cartier and her husband, Nel, Pauline Betournay and Helen LaBarre and her husband, Bob; his two dear brothers-in-law, Ernest Tetrault and Clyde Coburn; and his dear sister-in-law, Wilma Touchette and her husband, Ronald. At Henry’s request, his funeral services and burial will be private. There are no visiting hours.
