Obituary

Howard C. Chadwick, Jr., 80, of Mattapoisett, died Tuesday March 21, 2006 at Caritas St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Brighton after a brief illness. He was the husband of Mary M. (Sullivan) Chadwick with whom he shared 50 years of marriage.

Born in North Dighton, the son of the late Howard C. and Marion E. (Flynn) Chadwick, he lived in Mattapoisett most of his life.

Mr. Chadwick was formerly employed as a chief engineer with Apex Marine for many years until his retirement. While serving as chief engineer aboard the SS Rose City, he participated in the ocean rescue of 80 Vietnamese refugees who had been cast adrift in the South China Sea. For their efforts, he and the ship's crew received a formal commendation from the United Nations.

He was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church.

A decorated Veteran, Mr. Chadwick served as a commissioned officer in the United States Maritime Service during World War II and the United States Navy during the Korean War.
He was a graduate of Monsignor Coyle High School and Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
Mr. Chadwick loved his God and his country but above all, he loved his family.
After a life time of sailing ocean waters, his greatest joy came in returning to his family and "Homeport" in Mattapoisett where he passed along his love of the sea to his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Howard C. Chadwick, III, of Mattapoisett; 2 daughters, Anne C. Asci, and her husband William F., of Mattapoisett and Mary Beth Beal, and her husband Peter W., of Newtown, CT; a brother, David Chadwick of Mashpee; 2 sisters, Jean Farrell of Arlington, VA and Eunice Canty of Boca Raton, FL; 6 grandchildren, Peter C. Asci, Samuel C. Asci, Michael C. Asci, John C. Beal, Caroline C. Beal and Christopher C. Beal; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was the brother of the late Helen Gavin.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6), Mattapoisett, Saturday, March 25th at 9 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Anthony's Church at 10 AM.
Visiting hours Friday, March 24th from 4-8 PM.
Interment St. Anthony's Cemetery, Mattapoisett.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Caritas St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, 736 Cambridge St., Boston, MA 02135.
