Obituary

Raymond do Canto e Castro, founder of O Jornal, died on February 13, 2021 in Boston MA, at the age of 88. He is survived by his wife Rowena, his five children, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother and three sisters. In 1933, he was born in Sao Roque, Pico, Azores, Portugal. His family emigrated to the United States in 1947 to live the American dream. After attending San Jose High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he acquired his love of journalism and worked for the Stars and Stripes, a daily American military newspaper. After 20 years of service in the U.S. Air Force, he retired and settled in Fall River, Massachusetts, where he founded O Jornal - a Portuguese and English language weekly newspaper, serving the Portuguese-American community of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. For many years, O Jornal hosted the annual Portuguese-American Award Dinner which celebrated many notably successful Portuguese Americans throughout the United States such as broadcaster - journalist Meredith Vieira, and singer - composer Joe Raposo. Raymond had a passion for nature, music, literature, history and the arts. He also had a curious mind and a love of learning and travel. He adored his family and was a supportive and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother. He will live in our hearts forever.
