Obituary

Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Guhl, passed away on her 96th birthday,
February 15, 2021. She was born in 1925 in Reynoldsville, PA. to Orrie
and Elizabeth (Carberry) Sheesley. She was the youngest of 5 children.
After high school, Betty worked to put herself through 3 years of
college at Penn State (Dubois), majoring in physical therapy.

She married Paul on September 6, 1947 and moved to State College, PA
(Penn State) where they started their family. After living in Boston and
Cleveland, the family settled in Cuyahoga Falls, OH for 17 years to
raise their family. There, Betty was involved with her children’s
activities as well as garden and bridge clubs, and singing in the choir
at Bethany UCC . She loved to entertain and hosted many family and
friends gatherings.

When moving to Noank, CT in 1972, Betty became deeply involved
with the Noank Baptist Church (choir, treasurer, Evening Circle, Corner
Closet, Christmas Bazaar, Mystic River Homes, Main Street and High
Street homes) as well as being active in the community. She also
worked at several banks in Mystic.

Betty loved to keep busy and had many hobbies, including: playing
piano, calligraphy, sewing, cooking, crafts, and gardening. She was
always there for others in need by bringing cookies, soup, in person
assistance, or sending a note of support.

Family and friends have always been a central part of Betty and Paul’s
life. Their pride and joy as Oma & Opa was hosting for 10 years “Camp
SeaGuhl” - a two week annual summer gathering in Noank for their 9
grandchildren, who resided in multiple states. This camp experience
built a bond between all the cousins that otherwise would have not
happened. More than cousins, they became lifelong friends and the
spirit of Camp SeaGuhls continues amongst them all.

After their children were grown, Betty & Paul traveled around the
country and world visiting family and friends, which included retracing
Paul’s WWII tour of duty in Europe.

Betty was preceded in death by: her parents, husband Paul in 2009,
brothers Myron (Jean) and Devere (Helen), sister Awilda (Tom) Reed,
sister/niece Joanie (Ken) Shobert, and Betty Sheesley.
She is survived by her older brother Paul Sheesley as well as her
children: Barbara (Joe) Marken, Peter (Collin) Guhl, Thomas (Laura)
Guhl, Jennifer (Billy) Johnson, also Peg Collins and Susan Guhl. Nine
grandchildren: Joshua (Sarah) Johnson, Abby (Glenn) Cobb, Kristin
Guhl, Matt (Chloe) Guhl, Jared (Jennifer) Guhl, Aaron (Ashley) Guhl,

Marken. And thirteen great-grandchildren: Emily, Alex, Brendan, Riley,
Bella, Kinley, Ellis, Llewyn, Kaitlyn, Kyley, Oliver, Teddy, and Avery.

The family extends its deepest appreciation to the staff of Fairview
Nursing home for the outstanding support and care given to Betty and
the family during her 7 years of residency.

generous to others, and to hold your family dear.
