Mary E. (Calabrese) Butler of Bethel CT, formerly of Needham died on Sunday , March 19 at the Bethel Health Center. Mrs. Butler lived in Needham until 4 years ago when she moved to Bethel to be near her son. Born in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Lucy (Miani) Calabrese. She was a graduate of Needham High School and continued her studies in Nursing. She entered the Navy in 1942 was a member of the Navy Nurse Corps during World War II. She received an honorable discharge from the navy in 1946. She was employed as a nurse at the former Glover Memorial Hospital in Needham and was a longtime volunteer at the Charles River ARC in Needham. In 1945 she married “the boy across the street”, her childhood sweetheart, Roland Vincent Butler. They were married for 54 years until Vinnie’s death in 1999. She was the dear mother of Roland C. and his wife Mary Gildea Butler of Simsbury CT and Robert F. and his wife Helen Hedman Butler of Adelphi MD. Sister of the late Vito Calabrese. Sister in law of Lois Butler of Needham. Cherished grandmother of Kate Butler Forde of West Roxbury, Meaghan Butler of Cambridge and Matthew Butler of Simsbury CT. Funeral from the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Avenue Needham on Wednesday, March 22 at 9:00 Am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Saint Joseph Church at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours on Tuesday from 5-8 PM. Interment at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Needham.
