FALL RIVER, MA: John W. Deveney, 85, of Somerset, MA, husband of Florence Deveney for over 58 years, passed away after a short illness on Wednesday, February 3, 2021.
Mr. Deveney was the son of the late John and Helena (Kern) Deveney of Fall River, MA, and the brother of the late Phyllis Peck and James Deveney.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Deveney leaves a son, John Deveney (Ellen) of Plainville, MA, and three daughters, Susan Deveney of Somerset, MA, Cathy Rebello (David) of Somerset, MA, and Joyce Cadorette (Neal) of Somerset, MA. Mr. Deveney also leaves eight grandchildren, Sarah, Jacob, Abigail, Reaghan, Matthew, Ryan, Caitlyn, and Nathan, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Deveney was a graduate of Sacred Heart School, Bishop Coyle High School, and the Kinyon Campbell Business School. He was formerly employed by the Delco Beverage Company, Pacific Oil Company, Kane and Tepper, CPA, and Boyko Funeral Home.
He honorably served three years on active duty in the U.S. Army, to include an assignment at NATO Headquarters, Paris, France, as a member of the U.S. Army Finance Corps.
He was employed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a Revenue Agent for over 29 years specializing in large case audit management.
Mr. Deveney was an active communicant of St. Stanislaus Parish, Fall River, MA, wherein he was the Past Treasurer of the Men's Club, Catholic Charities Solicitor, Usher, volunteer at the annual Polish Festival, Vice President of the St. Vincent De Paul Society, and the Past President of the St. Stanislaus Credit Union. He was a recipient of the Marian Medal from Diocese of Fall River.
He was a longtime volunteer accountant for the AARP Tax Preparation Assistance Program for Seniors in the Greater Fall River area. He was also the former treasurer the Over the Hill Gang.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren grow and succeed. He also enjoyed a great summer afternoon at the beach.
Relatives and friends are invited to a mass in honor of Mr. Deveney on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, at 10:00am at St. Stanislaus Church, Fall River, MA, with interment at Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River, MA, under the supervision of the Boyko Funeral Home.
