(Germaine) Sutherland, father of Scott Sutherland of Milton and Heather Sutherland of Middleboro, Papa of Joseph Sutherland and brother of Howard Sutherland and Richard Sutherland, BFD both of Brockton and Robert Sutherland of Berkley. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Tuesday at 9am. Funeral Mass in St. Edith Stein/St. Edward Parish at 10:30am. Burial will be held at a later in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting Hours Monday 3-8pm. Obituary Information
Patrolman Joseph J. Sutherland, BPD, died unexpectedly Friday evening at the Brockton Hospital after being stricken while on duty. Born and raised in Boston, he was the son of the late Howard C. and Gertrude M. (Talbot) Sutherland. Joe moved to Brockton in his early teens where he attended Brockton schools. Following high school he entered the US Marine Corps and was a veteran of Vietnam who received three Purple Hearts. From 1970 to 1996 he served with the US Army Reserves, retiring as a First Sergeant from the 187th Support Battalion.
He had been employed at Stop and Shop Companies for ten years prior to joining the Brockton Police Department in 1981 where he was a Patrolman and served on the Brockton Police Honor Guard and Brockton Police Swat Team. He was a graduate of Massasoit Community College, Northeastern University and Anna Marie College.
Joe is survived by his wife of 14 years, Elizabeth A. (Germaine) Sutherland, one son Scott Sutherland of Milton, one daughter Heather Sutherland of Middleboro, one grandson Joseph Sutherland, three brothers Howard Sutherland and Richard Sutherland, BFD both of Brockton and Robert Sutherland of Berkley. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
