Obituary

AUBURN: Joan M. (Ghize) Lowney, 86, formerly of Worcester and Auburn, died on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

Her husband of 58 years, Thomas D. “Bud” Lowney died August 5, 2013. She leaves five children, Mary C. Reidy and her husband Ron of Hopkinton, Kathleen A. Krause and her husband Jonathan of Kennebunkport, ME, Brian M. Lowney and his wife Julia of Miami, FL, Caroline M. Ramos and her husband Chris of Oak Harbor, WA, Andrew J. Lowney and his wife Rose of Dedham; 6 grandchildren, Michael Lowney, Kevin, Jessica and Joelle Krause, Alanna and Giovanna Lowney; three great grandchildren, Mia Elizabeth Lowney, Jake and Abby Krause; and several nieces and nephews.

Her first granddaughter, Jill Elizabeth Lowney, and her two brothers, John W. “Jack” Ghize and Paul E. Ghize, all predeceased her.

She was born and raised in Worcester, daughter of the late John G. and Elsie I. (Butterfield) Ghize and was a graduate of South High School and Salter Secretarial School. She lived in Worcester until moving to Auburn in 1999.

Joan was Assistant Activities Director at St. Francis Adult Day Care in Worcester where she worked for 17 years until retiring in 2002.

She was a former member of North American Martyrs Church in Auburn. She had previously been a member at St. Christopher’s Church and at St. Joan of Arc Church in Worcester, having served as a CCD Teacher. She also did volunteer work in Worcester Catholic Schools. She loved owls, nature and most enjoyed spending time with her family. She will be remembered for her love of Broadway Shows and in particular, her favorite, The Phantom of the Opera.

There are no calling hours. A FUNERAL MASS will be held at 10 A.M. on MONDAY, JAN. 25 in NORTH AMERICAN MARTYRS CHURCH, 8 Wyoma Dr., in Auburn. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester. Due to the current pandemic, a Celebration of Joan’s Life will be held at a later date.
