Obituary

Doris G. (Evicci) Hurley, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died peacefully of natural causes on Tuesday, January 19, 2021. She was 101 years old.

Doris was the daughter of the late Frederick W. Evicci and of the late Alice B. (Austin) Evicci. She was raised in Lowell and educated in Lowell schools. During World War II, while her husband served in the U.S. Army on the European front, Doris worked for the Lowell Sun in the marketing and circulation department.

Doris devoted decades of her life to volunteer charitable and community work. She was a past president of the Ladies of St. John's Hospital and chairman of the Lowell Table of The Guild of The Infant Saviour. She founded, chaired and, for more than twenty-five years, managed the Browse Shop, an in-house fundraiser at St. John's/Saints Memorial Hospital. Doris also supported a diverse list of charitable and cultural organizations, including the Lowell Garden Club, the Whistler House, the Middlesex Women's Society and D'Youville Women's Auxiliary. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church Sodality.

Doris was an enthusiastic and adventurous traveler. She and her husband enjoyed thirty-two ocean cruises as well as many land vacations around the world. Doris was also an avid and talented gardener and a voracious reader.

Doris was predeceased by her beloved husband of forty-seven years, Francis L. Hurley; by her cherished son, Francis L. "Frank" Hurley, Jr.; by her brother, Fred W. Evicci; and by Richard F. Simpson. She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Hurley, daughter Joanne Locicero, grandson Christian M. Ironfield, grandson Sean M. Hurley and his wife, Tabitha, great-grandson Christian M. Ironfield, Jr., great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

At Doris' request, there will be no calling hours and funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to a favorite charity or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929; Immaculate Conception Church, 3 Fayette Street, Lowell, MA 01852; or Merrimack Valley Food Bank, 735 Broadway Street, Lowell, MA 01854.
