Obituary

NEW BEDFORD — Howard C. Dyer Jr., 77, of South Dartmouth died Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Norma L. (Dalzell) Dyer.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Howard C. Sr. and Florence (Moyer) Dyer. He was a lifelong area resident.
A graduate of New Bedford High School, he earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Wesleyan University and a degree in public administration from Syracuse University.
He served in the Army for two years.
He worked for the state of Wisconsin a few years, and then was general manager and treasurer of the New Bedford Storage Warehouse.
He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and was a vestry man, junior and senior warden, and treasurer and trustee of parish funds. He was a trustee and member of the board of investment at the old New Bedford Five Cents Savings Bank, and later was vice president and trustee of Compass Bank. He was a former director and president of the Wamsutta Club; a board member, president and campaign chairman of the United Way of Greater New Bedford; a board member and vice president of the Old Dartmouth Historical Association; a life member and member of the board of managers of the New Bedford Port Society; a member of the executive committee, secretary and chairman of the Greater New Bedford Industrial Foundation; a trustee of Southeastern Massachusetts University; and a former board member and president of the New Bedford Rotary Club.
A master mason, he was a member of the Abraham H. Howland Jr. Masonic Lodge, A.F.&A.M.; a former member of the board of directors of the YMCA and the board of the New Bedford Chamber of Commerce; former vice president and a member of the board of directors of the American Red Cross; a member of the state board of directors of Easter Seals; and former chairman of the Southeastern Massachusetts Fund Drive for the Heart Association.
Survivors include his widow; and a sister, Marion D. Galwardy of Hudson, Ohio.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2006, at Grace Episcopal Church, 422 County St. New Bedford, Ma. Visiting hours on Sunday from 4-7 P.M. Interior ramp available through the rear entrance. Remembrances may be made in his name to the Memorial Fund of his church, 133 School St. New Bedford, Ma. 02740. Burial is private.
