Mary Woody Peterson, 92, of LaGrange died Friday, March 17, 2006 at Brian Center in LaGrange. Graveside funeral services will be held Monday, March 20, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Oakridge Cemetery. Rev. Jim Bass, Jr. will officiate with burial to follow at Oakridge Cemetery.
Ms. Peterson was born on December 29, 1913 in Fannin County, GA and was the daughter of Willis G. Woody and Susanna Reynolds Woody, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John H. Peterson, Sr., who died on February 17, 1974; one son, John H. Peterson, Jr.; three brothers, Milton M. Woody, W. Esco Woody and L. Roy Woody; and three sisters, Katie Woody, Maude W. Arabie and Edna W. Proe. She was a member of Tifton's First United Methodist Church and served for over 50 years in many capacities. She helped start Tifton's scouting movement; was a member of the Tifton Woman's Club and the Dental Association Auxiliary. She attended the 1950 Mid-Century White House Conference of Children and Youth; organized a Waiting Wives Group during the Vietnam War and taught Bible in the Tift County Schools for 10 years.
Ms. Peterson is survived by one son and two daughters-in-law, Nick A. and Nell Peterson of Pine Mountain and Jeanette P. Peterson of Decatur; one daughter and son-in-law, Catharine P. and Hugh Maze of Pine Mountain; three grandsons and their wives, Alton and Wanda Peterson of Pine Mountain, Jonathan and Lori Peterson of Atlanta and Gregory Maze of Pine Mountain; one great granddaughter and her husband, Amanda P. and James Ross of Standing Rock, Alabama; one great grandson, Christian X. Peterson of Atlanta; one step granddaughter and her husband, Robin M. and Ken Stephens of Alpharetta; one step great granddaughter, Angelica L. Stephens of Alpharetta; one step great grandson, John Erik Stephens of Alpharetta; and various nieces, nephews and cousins.
