Karen Anne (Sullivan) Langan, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, died peacefully surrounded by her family at her home on Thursday, March 16, 2006. She was 50 years old.
Karen was born in Boston on October 10, 1955. She grew up in Charlestown where she attended St. Mary's Grammar School and graduated from Pope John High School in Everett in 1973. She furthered her education attending Bunker Hill Community College and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Suffolk University. Karen taught in the Boston Public School System for 5 years participating in the after school program in Charlestown Until her illness prevented her from working, Karen took pride in putting on the "orange jacket" everyday to ensure that the students at the Warren Prescott School in Charlestown arrived and went home from school safely everyday. She has been a fixture at the corner of Bartlett and School Streets serving as a Traffic Supervisor for the City of Boston, crossing the students of Boston and enduring many impatient drivers, always with a smile, for the last 10 years. She was a proud member of St. Francis De Sales Social Club and was very proud of her Irish roots and being a "Townie".
Karen is the beloved wife of Boston Firefighter Joseph P. Langan, Jr., who she married on May 10, 1986. She is the devoted mother Kimberly A. Weafer and her fiance Matthew Allen, Erin K. Weafer, Patrick S. Langan and William J.Langan, all of Charlestown. Karen is the adored "Mere" to Taylor Christina. She is the beloved daughter of Patricia (Curran) Sullivan of Charlestown and the late William J."Sully" Sullivan. Karen is the beloved sister of Diane Shea and her husband Michael of Medford, Donald Sullivan of Oakham, Christine Martell, Patrick Sullivan and his wife Amy, all of Charlestown. She is the beloved granddaughter of Eiizabeth "Gert" (Fox) Curran of Charlestown, sister-in-law of Tricia and Michael Leahy of Dorchester, GraceAnn and Steven McLaughlin of Charlestown. She is the loving aunt of Michaelagh and Robert Shea, Michael Sullivan, Britanny and Teaghan McLaughlin and Dennis and Conor Leahy. Karen is the daughter-in-law of the late Mary "Patsy" (Mullen) and Joseph P. Langan, Sr. Karen is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Karen's Funeral will be held from the Frank H. Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill Street, Charlestown on Monday, March 20, 2006, at 9:00 a.m. followed by her Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill Street, Charlestown, at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting Hours for Karen will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2006, from 2 - 7 p.m. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.
