Obituary

James J. Sugrue, Jr. (Jim), 58 of Fort Worth, Texas, formerly of Franklin, MA passed away at home on Tuesday, January 12, 2021. He was surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Jim grew up in Franklin where he graduated from Franklin High in 1981 and played for the varsity football team, Jim’s favorite sport. After graduating, he entered the Navy and proudly served his country for 6 years. Jim went on to work for American Airlines for 30 years where his dedication to his job ensured a bright future for his family. He was well known at work, both in Boston and Dallas, where his coworkers would often rely on him for advice.

Jim was the loving husband of 21 years to Susan (Feyler) Sugrue and dedicated father to Matthew (17) and Victoria (15). Jim’s devotion to his family was displayed every day as he juggled his time at work while making sure to be the best husband and father. He was very proud of his children and made it a priority to attend events like Matt’s drumline competitions, Tori’s dance performances and to even coach Matt’s football team. His devotion to family went beyond his wife and children as he would call his mother almost daily to check in on his family in Franklin.

Over the years, Jim looked forward to his trips back to Boston. It was a tradition for Jim, Sue and the kids to spend time at the ocean to relax on the beach and enjoy some fresh seafood. In addition, some of his greatest times were spent grilling out in the backyard with family and friends or simply working with his dad and brother on a project around their house. When he was at home in Texas, he enjoyed hosting football games with his family and friends; his Texas family. Jim cherished his time with his immediate family, especially when they would all go hiking together. Jim’s love for his dog, Murphy, was mutual. They both enjoyed going for walks and in the evening, Murphy always made sure to settle down right beside him.

Jim will be greatly missed by many friends, co-workers and family, both from Texas and Massachusetts, who have provided much love and support to him and his family.

Jim is survived by his father James Sugrue and the late Sheila Sugrue of Franklin, MA, his sister Kerri Barrett and her husband Tom of Millis, MA and brother Steven Sugrue and his wife Carol of Franklin, MA. Jim is the special Uncle and Great Uncle to eight nephews. He will also be missed by many special extended family members.

Although a private viewing will be held, relatives and friends are invited to join the procession departing from Charles F Oteri & Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St to St Mary’s Cemetery at 11:45 a.m. on Monday January 18th.
