Fall River—Augustine F. (“Gus”) Gonsalves, age 69 of Fall River, lost his 3 year battle with prostate cancer on Monday, January 11, 2020. He was the husband of Patrice (Plunkett) Gonsalves of 23 years and the son of the late Augustine & Maria Teresa (Couto-Cabral) Gonsalves.
He graduated from B.M.C Durfee, Class of 1969, and graduated from Southeastern Massachusetts University in 1973. He received a Master’s degree from Assumption College in 1986. He was employed for the past 26 years with the Dept. of Industrial Accidents, with the past 17 years as a conciliator.
Gus had polio in his youth and this left him with a permanent limp but in spite of this he was a good athlete, especially in basketball. He was also an accomplished Chess player for over 50 years, winning over 20 trophies.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his son Andrew (wife Jenn Robbins); a granddaughter Lauren; Siblings Maria Theresa Tavares (husband Ernest), and Lydia Gonsalves, both of Fall River. He was the brother of the late Maria C. “Connie” (Gonsalves) Aguiar and Maria Helena (Gonsalves) Aguiar. He is also survived by a niece: Betty Furtado, nephews: Ernest Tavares, Michael and Joseph Aguiar, cousins and friends. He is also survived by his former wife Peg Pacheco.
His funeral will take place from the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home 1521 N. Main St. Fall River with a Private Family Viewing on Tuesday, Jan. 19th at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Public Funeral Mass in Good Shepherd Church, S. Main St. at 10:00 A.M. Interment in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Calling hours on Monday, Jan.18th from 4-8 P.M.
