Ruth Loretta (Bail) Reese, born in South Hadley, Massachusetts, passed away January 9, 2021 at age 96. Ruth was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Dr. James E. Reese Jr., her seven siblings and, most recently, by her daughter, Gail Kathryn Reese. She is survived by her four sons and their spouses: James and Nancy of Fairfield, CT; Michael and Mary Alice of Rockland, ME; Peter and Gail Anne of Chicopee; Richard and Cheryl, also of Chicopee. Ruth had nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who all brought her immense pleasure and pride. There are many nieces and nephews who have benefited from her guidance and affection. Ruth had a real talent for creating a warm atmosphere for gatherings, presenting modest portions of a wide variety of delicious foods which somehow always complemented each other. However, both family and friends knew these elegant scenes would inevitably transform into battlefields of intense discussion led by Ruth’s strong advocacy for the poor, women’s rights, social justice, and for her progressive principles. Well-read in politics and history, she was never one to shy away from a lively discussion and was a formidable opponent on any topic. Her forthright conversations always ended amicably, usually with much laughter, and left one feeling better for the experience. Ruth's unconditional love, support, and encouragement of every family member cannot be replaced. But her principles of equality, generosity, and concern for others will live on. All services will be held at a later date after Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted. The Grise Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
