Obituary

Betty McLain McClanahan, age 86, passed away January 7, 2021 at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton, Georgia. Betty was born on May 24, 1934 in Ethel, Mississippi. Her parents were John and Lillian McLain. Betty was married to the late Ted McClanahan.

Betty is survived by her children John Marshall Pevey and Janis Pevey Havard; her Grandchildren Shanna Fretwell, James “Bo” Mitchell, Ashlee Pevey Bryan, Amanda Pevey Vanhouten, Kevin Pevey, Tiffany Pevey, Sarah Farwick, Britanie Spurr and Jason Stricklin; Great Grandchildren Kyeleigh Mitchell, Keenan Mitchell, Kimberly Fretwell, Matthew Fretwell, Ian Fretwell, Anna Catherine Custard, Jocelyn Spurr, John Farwick, Colten Farwick, Rileigh Farwick, David Stricklin, Joshua Stricklin, Steven Pevey, John Jacob Pevey, Paisley Vanhouten, Jacob Vanhouten, Avery Vanhouten and Best Friends Billie Noland and Cathy Lancaster.

Betty attended Clinton High school where she was honored as being their first homecoming queen in 1951. A couple of years later she attended Hinds Junior College and served on the Homecoming Court. Betty received her BA Degree in Psychology from Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, MS. She used her psychology degree serving as a Counselor for Safe Haven Women’s Shelter until she retired. She will also be remembered for providing counseling to many who struggle(d) with addiction, alcoholism and their families. Betty, Mom, Mimi will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
