TEWKSBURY - Evelyn M. (McKenna) Haines, age 82, died peacefully on Wednesday afternoon,
March 15, at her home, with her daughter and son-in-law Miriam and William Kelleher at her
bedside.
She was born on February 22, 1924, in East Boston, the daughter of the late Henry and Elizabeth
(Curran) McKenna. After graduating from Fitton Central High School in East Boston, she
entered the Maryknoll Convent. Evelyn was known as Sister Cora Lee Marie. Having suffered a
major illness in 1945, she received an Indult of Securalization from the Pope. She then worked
for New England Telephone in Watertown, MA.
Evelyn was an avid reader, a Girl Scout leader, was a member of morning bowling leagues from
1960 until 2002, a former frequent visitor to the Tewksbury Senior Drop-In Center, and a former
member of Tewksbury Golden Age Club. She also enjoyed travel, luncheon out, swimming,
dancing, and watching classic movies. She was proud of her Irish heritage and loved to sing Irish
songs.
As a parishioner of St. William’s Church in Tewksbury, she attended Mass faithfully, especially
First Friday Mass, until her second major illness took over her life.
Evelyn is survived by her former husband, Richard E. Haines of Springfield, OH; two daughters
and sons-in-law, Miriam I. Kelleher and her husband William P. of Tewksbury, Carolyn M. Shine
and her husband J. Michael of Wilmington; a sister, Ethel Salvo of Derry, NH; sisters-in-law and
brothers-in-law, Rose McKenna of Tewksbury, Elinor T. Haines of Tewksbury, Leonard C.
Haines of Billerica, Gerald A. and his wife Iryl F. Haines of Springfield, OH, Dorothy B. Connolly
and her husband James W. Of Tewksbury, Evelyn M. Haines of Billerica, Margaret R. Haines of
Weiser, ID, Joanne Haines of Nashua, NH, Judith Madonna (Sarafina) Haines, and Brenda A.
Bizeur and her husband Stanley all of NH, Donna G. Haines of Tewksbury; five grandchildren;
eight great grandchildren; many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, her good
friend Jeanne Wicks of Tewksbury.
She was also grandmother of the late Joseph Alden Shine; sister of the late Henry McKenna; and sister-in-law of the late Dominic Salvo,
Robert A. Haines, Frederick E. Haines, Donald F. Haines and his wife Charleen, Alice A. Haines,
William Peter Haines, and Ralph T. Haines.
Graveside services
were held Saturday, Mar. 18, in the Tewksbury Cemetery.
