Obituary

Anthony J. Matanes, Jr. 81, of Franklin, died peacefully, at his home, Sunday January 3, 2021 following an illness. He was the beloved husband of Gail J. (Uhthoff) Matanes, with whom he shared 43 years of marriage.

Born May 21, 1939 in Boston, a son of the late Anthony J. and Antoinette L. (Tomkotonis) Matanes, he was a former longtime resident of Braintree, before moving to Franklin to be closer to family.

He lived in the family home on Marine Road in South Boston throughout his childhood, and was a graduate of South Boston High School. He continued his education at Northeastern University where received his associate’s degree in engineering.

Anthony was a retired construction engineer and had worked for the former Boston Edison Electric Company. He oversaw many projects including the “Big Dig” and the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth.

Anthony known, as “Sonny” was the Co-Capitan of the South Boston High Hockey team, was a member of the football team as well as taking the sailing program as a junior member of the South Boston yacht Club.

Tony was devoted to his wife and family, he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great granddaughter. One of Tony’s passions was sailing and along with his wife owned the sailboat “Gail Wind” which was often seen at Marina Bay in Quincy.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, David A. Matanes of Atlanta, GA, Susan L. Jacobson and her husband Jim of Franklin, Laura J. Husak and her husband Joseph of Franklin, a sister Carolyn A. Wong and her husband John of Braintree and many cousins, nieces, nephews.

Also surviving are his grandchildren, Kevin Jacobson, Lauren Masto, Stephen Jacobson, Ryan Rice, Jack Husak and his great granddaughter Brooke Masto.

Due to Covid-19 and the family’s concern for others, a private graveside service will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Franklin.
