Obituary

Joan M. Roderick of Provincetown passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 19th at Seashore Pointe Wellness Center in Provincetown. She was the widow of James J. Roderick, Sr. who died in 2001.

Born in Brooklyn NY, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Yvonne Fitzpatrick. Joan was raised in Orleans, proudly graduating from Orleans High School in 1949. She worked for many years at Howard Johnson in Orleans, where she met her future husband Jimmy. They married in 1950 and moved to Provincetown. In Provincetown, she managed the office for the family business, James J Roderick Inc., where she became well known for always being the ‘nice lady who answered the phone’.

Joan was well known for her kindness. Her home was always open and she welcomed many nieces, nephews and friends who wanted to have a meal or spend the summer in Provincetown. For many years she was a frequent visitor at the former Cape End Manor (now Seashore Pointe). She visited with family and friends, making sure that they had company and seeing that their needs were met. She was an active member of St. Peter the Apostle Parish and found a great deal of comfort in the church. Joan was also a loyal Red Sox fan.

Weekends in the 50s, 60s and 70s were spent with her family and friends at Hatches Harbor. Over the years Joan volunteered for many organizations and for several years was the secretary for the Provincetown Fire Department while her husband Jimmy served as the fire chief.

Joan is survived by her daughter Jane Roderick and her partner Susan Brink, and by sons Jim Roderick and his wife Nancy, and Steven Roderick. She is also survived by granddaughters Phoebe and wife Jen Hamilton, Lucy and her husband Chris McKernan, and Stephanie Jane Roderick, great grandchildren Silas Hamilton, Willow Hamilton, Marlee Jo McKernan and Cora McKernan. She also leaves a brother Paul Fitzpatrick and sister-in-law Kathy Fitzpatrick, a cousin Margie Masella along with many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Joan’s family wishes to thank the incredible staff at Seashore Pointe for their care, concern and comfort of Joan while she was a resident there.

A Funeral Mass at St Peter the Apostle Church, 11 Prince St, Provincetown is scheduled for 10:00 am, Friday May 14, 2021. Burial will immediately follow the Mass at St Peters Cemetery. All Covid protocols in effect at the time will be strictly followed.

If desired, donations in Joan’s memory may be made to Helping Our Women, 34 Conwell Street, Provincetown MA 02657.
