WEST BROOKFIELD: Gennaro "Papa" Agrillo,87, of Foster Hill Rd., died Saturday, Dec.19 in UMASS Medical Center in Worcester due to complications of Covid-19. He was predeceased by two brothers Fedele & Umberto Agrillo and two sisters Lucia & Anna Agrillo and a son in law Vincenzo Dattilo. He was the son of Gennaro Agrillo and Erminia Cardamone. He leaves his wife, recently celebrating sixty-seven years of marriage, Amalia (Serra) Agrillo, his sister Emilia Agrillo of Cosenza, his brother Antonio Agrillo of Milano, three daughters Lisa DeCicco and her husband Pasquale, Antonella Dattilo all of Italy, and Patricia Spadea and her husband Joseph of W.Brookfield with whom he lived, eight grandchildren including Barbara, Assunta, Paola, Carla, Benedetta, Giuseppe, Alessio, and Vincent and fourteen great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Gennaro was born in Cosenza, Italy in August of 1933 and grew up during the Second World War. With limited high school education and married at 19 years of age, he took work for the government of Cosenza painting schools where he worked until retirement. Walking to work, buying fresh produce in the morning, stopping at his favorite bar in the afternoon for an espresso and cornetto was a daily routine. There was great pleasure in hour-long swims in the summer where the Mediterranean met the Tyrrhenian Sea with an affinity for the ocean. In the evenings, he enjoyed a glass of wine and a game of scopa with his neighbors or family...seldom losing. He appreciated making wine as much as drinking it and made sure "il forno" was started on time. He loved gardening, and there was always an abundance of tomatoes for a beloved salad. Weekends were filled with soccer, Juventus to be exact, and if no such game, then a western or Bond film. Always dressed, regardless of the occasion, he loved his local Marshalls. He drove his grandchildren and later great-grandchildren to and from school. His immense happiness came with being around his family. He embraced you with a smile and a warm disposition, rarely having a complaint. If you were fortunate enough, you became one of his gumbas. You would call him a humble man; he found the key to living well.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 23 from the J.HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer with a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, 22 West Main St., W.Brookfield. Covid-19 precautions, face masks and social distancing must be observed. Burial will follow in Brookfield Cemetery, Brookfield. Calling hours are Tuesday, Dec. 22 from 4 to 7pm in the funeral home.
