Obituary

SPRINGFIELD - Pedro M. Gonzalez, 64, of the Atwater Park section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Friday, December 4, 2020. Pedro M. Gonzalez was born to José R. and Maria A. (Jimenez) Gonzalez in Villa Tapia, Salcedo, The Dominican Republic on May 19, 1956. He was raised in The Dominican Republic until he turned 18 when he moved to New York City, later he moved to Lawrence, MA and in 1980 he made his final move to the place he called home, Springfield, MA where he lived the remainder of his life. He loved baseball and in his younger years he tried out to become a pitcher for the Boston Red Soxs. Even though he did not make it he was very proud of it. That is the kind of person he was, always looking at the bright side of things. He was well known in the community of the North End of Springfield where he was an entrepreneur and a very hard-working man. He was the owner of New World Travel Adventures and previously owned Bodegas New World Travel, both in Springfield. It is genuinely impossible to sum up Pedro’s life in a matter of minutes, to do it right would take days, weeks even. He just did so much. He got everywhere, tried everything, met everyone, truly enjoyed people he met in his life, and made a great impression wherever he went. Apart from me, Marina (Fernandez) Gonzalez, his wife and soul mate, Pedro leaves behind his four children: Kasandra, Jacqueline, Pedro Jr., and Jonathan Gonzalez; his two sisters, Antonia Gonzalez, and Olivia Reynoso, his three brothers; Jose M. Gonzalez, Ramon Gonzalez, and Jose I. Gonzalez, four grandchildren and his many nephews, nieces, cousins and numerous friends and extended family members. My husband was such a wonderful man. I am not sure I can really express just how much I will miss him. Not only was he a wonderful husband, but a wonderful father, grandfather, best friend, colleague and so much more. It has been 21 years since we were first married, September 5, 1999 (Blessed Sacrament Church of Springfield) and I look back over those years with so much happiness. Apart from his parents he was also predeceased by one of his brothers, Francisco Gonzalez due to Covid-19. Actions speak louder than words, words are easy, but my husband was very much a man of actions, nobody could deny that. I know that to the world during these hard times, my husband is just another number in the Covid-19 death toll but to his family and friends this is a big loss; for he was an exceptional man that we are all going to miss. All services will be private. There are no visiting hours at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, Ma 01107. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made in his memory to The Gray House, 22 Sheldon Street Springfield, MA 01107.
