Obituary

Dennis J. Layfield, 80, of Waterview Drive, Smithfield, died Sunday, December 6, 2020 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of Sheila M. (Peloquin) Layfield. They had been married for 34 years.

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Daniel and Ida D. (Mimande) Layfield. He had most recently lived in Smithfield and had previously lived in Tiverton.

Dennis served in the US Coast Guard for 20 years. After he retired from the Coast Guard he worked at D.N. Kelly and Son Shipyard as an Operations Manager and at Marine Safety Consultants as a Marine Surveyor. Dennis also had his own Marine Surveying Business, Maritime Consultants.

Dennis was a man of great faith. He was a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, and a former La Salette Associate. Dennis also taught CCD and was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Madeline’s Church in Tiverton RI.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children: Sheila A. Finelli, Denise M., Christopher D. and Donna P. Layfield, his three grandchildren and a great grandson. He was the brother of the late Richard E. Layfield. Dennis also had several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 9:30 in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville. Social distancing and COVID protocols must be followed. A private military burial will follow. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to St. Philip’s Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville RI 02828
