Obituary

Mr. Hugh D. Matthews, 87, a resident of Medford and former resident of Hampstead, New Hampshire, passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at Melrose Wakefield Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the beloved son of the late David and Christine (MacPhail) Matthews. Mr. Matthews was employed as a foreman with Colonial Printing in Malden prior to his retirement. Mr. Matthews was a member of Island Pond Baptist Church and the Lions Club of Hampstead, as well as a member of the former Malden German Club, and served as an assistant leader with the Boy Scouts. Hugh enjoyed fishing, bowling, softball, and was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. As a child, he spent summers at the family farm on Cape Breton Island and returned to his beloved Nova Scotia throughout his life including annual visits with his wife Marie in their RV to attend ceilidhs and see family.

Hugh was pre-deceased by his beloved wife Marie (Lacy) Matthews, granddaughter Rachel Russell Pagan, and great-grandson Aidan Bellitti. He was also pre-deceased by his siblings Constance Silva, Ralph Matthews, Audrey Stone, and Charlene Matthews. He is survived by loving children Sandy Matthews and her wife Monie Buchanan of DeLand, FL, Sharon and her husband Robert Boudreau of Salem, NH, Sheryll and her husband Michael Russell of Kingston, NH, Hugh Matthews Jr. and his wife Debi of Billerica, David Matthews of Winter Springs, FL, and Renee and her husband Andrew Meuse of Medford; grandchildren Vanessa Bellitti, Sean Blanchard, Nicholas Matthews, Joshua Matthews, Lindsey Matthews, Jackie Meuse, and Charlotte Meuse; and great-grandchildren Kristina, Lucienne, Eli, Ezra, Jackson, and Evangeline. He is also survived by his ex-wife Genevieve (McGinnis) Matthews, brother-in-law Thomas Stone of Medford, and sister-in-law Maureen and her husband Charles Houghton of Stoneham, and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at Oak Grove Cemetery, 230 Playstead Road, Medford on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at 11:00 AM. Online condolences may be shared at www.magliozzifuneralhome.com.
