Stephen S. Gwozdz, 97, of Dartmouth, formerly of New Bedford passed away Wednesday November 18, 2020 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of the late Irene R. (Gallagher) Gwozdz for 53 years.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Stanislaus and Mary V. (Kalisz) Gwozdz, he lived in New Bedford most of his life before moving to Dartmouth in recent years.
He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.
Mr. Gwozdz was formerly employed as an electrician for Weinstein Electric and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for many years until his retirement.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, 165th Engineer Combat Battalion and participated in the Battles of Northern France, the Rhineland, and Central Europe.
Survivors include three children, Nancy G. Turnbull and her husband Kurt of Osterville, Janice M. Kalaghan and her partner Donald Gill of Hanover, and Robert S. Gwozdz and his partner Janice Fresnedo of Manville, NJ; two sisters, Genevieve Ziemba of Providence, RI and Rita Mulligan of New Bedford; three grandchildren, Laurie A. Jackson and her husband Dennis, Brian J. Turnbull, and David S. Turnbull; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Walter Gwozdz, Suzanne Bland, and Edwin Gwozdz.
Steve was known for his quiet demeanor, determination, and willingness to assist anyone in need with his time and talents. He loved and prioritized his family, giving of himself without expectation in return. Whether wiring the homes of his family and friends or providing mechanical expertise, he used his actions over words to express his love for his children, grandchildren, siblings, parents and especially his wife to whom he was devoted in her final years. He did not seek praise or attention for his time or efforts. Steve was truly a giving, unselfish man.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday November 23rd at 11 AM at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Sunday November 22nd from 1-4 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
