Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Janet Louise (Sowle) Miller announces her passing, peacefully at home, on November 19, 2020 at the age of 86.

Born in New Bedford to Ina (King) and Fred Sowle, she was married to the love of her life and high school sweetheart James F. Miller for the past 67 years.

An avid card player, she also enjoyed Tuesday afternoon Domino games with her high school friends. Janet loved camping with her family, the 6 J’s, for over 50 years at Ellis Haven, making lifelong friendships along the way. Among her most cherished memories were the times that she spent with her 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and was excitedly awaiting two more. They were the pride and joy of her life and their love for her remains immeasurable.

Janet enjoyed crafts and was often called upon by family and friends to make cakes for special occasions. Her decorating skills were extraordinary and everyone loved her frosting . “Nansie” was also well known for her annual Christmas “Countdown Bags” to grandkids and friends with a gift being opened daily by the recipient during Advent. She spent many months of the year shopping for gifts to fill those bags.

To the core, Janet was a loving and caring individual who would go out of her way to help others. When her grandkids needed rides she was always on duty. She was a faithful parishioner of St. John Neumann Church in Freetown and a beloved member of the couple’s club.

Janet is survived by her husband James; 4 children, James F. Miller Jr. and his wife, Ginger of Acushnet, Jeffrey C. Miller and his wife, Elizabeth of New Bedford, Jill Britton of New Bedford, and Jennifer Camire and her partner, John Medeiros of Fairhaven. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, David Britton.

Her Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at 10 AM at St. John Neumann Church, 157 Middleboro Rd., East Freetown, with everyone meeting directly at the Church. Burial will be private. Visitation will be Monday from 4-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations in Janet's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
