With tremendous sorrow, the family of Cathy Paradis, 64, a resident of the Village of Barnstable, Massachusetts, announces her sudden passing on Sunday, November 1, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, the city of her birth.
A friend to many, and family to a very lucky few, she touched lives deeply on every street where she lived. Born in Boston, Cathy spent her youth in Norwell, attending Norwell Public Schools. Her life’s work and adventures took her to South Carolina, Arizona, New York, and Cambridge, Mass. But it was to Cape Cod that she gave her heart—and where she met her devoted life partner, Ra’shaan Byrne. There, tending the gardens she created and in her spiritual connection to birds, she honored the sacredness of nature.
People wondered “Why couldn’t there be more like her?” Her kindness was given spontaneously to friends and strangers—gifts of her talents from the kitchen, a warm and welcoming greeting, a touching conversation, as deep connections were made sometimes despite considerable differences, as a penetrating smile given at her check-out counter. Long lines often formed there, although other adjacent lines were shorter. That says it all.
Catherine Margaret Paradis was born on October 12, 1956 to the late Joseph Paul Paradis and Joyce Margaret (Strudwick) Paradis. Given the names of both of her grandmothers, Cathy honored that heritage and fulfilled their legacy in ways that would make them proud.
In addition to Ra’shaan Byrne of Barnstable, she is survived by a sister Jacquelyn (Paradis) Almer Hawkinson of Lexington; a brother Mark Paradis (Martha) of Scituate; nieces Heather Paradis of Scituate and Sarah Almer (Avi Green) of Cambridge; and a grandniece, Rachel Almer, also of Cambridge. She leaves behind innumerable admiring friends and neighbors, and a team of dedicated medical professionals for whom her gratitude and appreciation were expressed daily.
The family will hold a Celebration of Life for Cathy in the springtime on Cape Cod. Those who desire to be notified of details may send a note to the family at email JackieHawkinson1@gmail.com. Tributes in her memory may be made to Breast Cancer Action.
