Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Deacon Leon Marcel Mireault, 92, of the Sixteen Acres section of Springfield and a former longtime resident of Indian Orchard, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, November 10, 2020. He passed into Eternal Life at the Life Care Center of Wilbraham surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on April 9, 1928, a beloved son of the late Leon S. Mireault and Eva L. (Balthazard) Mireault SanSoucie, graduated in 1946 from the High School of Commerce and was a lifelong resident of Springfield. In 1948, he served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and attained the rank of Private First Class. He later served in the United Sates Marine Corps Reserves. Following his military service, he was employed as an Accountant and Deputy City Collector for 46 years for the City of Springfield and retired in 1992. Leon was Ordained in 1991 as a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Springfield at The Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel by the late Most Reverend Joseph F. Maguire, Bishop of Springfield. He was assigned to serve at Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee with Reverend Monsignor Leo A. Leclerc and later with many priests assigned to the parish. Leon was a former Cub Scout Master for the Cub Scout Pack 4 at the Congregational Church in Indian Orchard, a former member of the Knights of Columbus Council in Indian Orchard, a former member of the Springfield Lodge of Elks 61, and a member of the Low Vision Group at the Veterans Administration in Leeds and Bond Street in Springfield. Most of all, he was a quiet man who loved his family, his church and his many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and soul mate, Marie-Jeanne (Fontaine) Mireault. They were married on April 19, 1954 at the former Saint Aloysius Church in Indian Orchard and were blessed with over 66 years of happiness together. Besides his wife, he leaves his three loving children, David A. Mireault and his wife, Holly, of Auburn, ME, Philip L. Mireault and his wife, Judy, of Keene, NH and Denise M. Hannigan and her husband, Joseph, of Somers, CT; his three cherished grandchildren, Sarah M. Hannigan and Christopher J. Hannigan, both of Boston, and Alyson M. Mireault of Keene, NH; his two step-grandchildren, Kady and Nick Alexander and their families; his three dear brothers-in-law, Louis-Paul Fontaine and his wife, Theresa, of Wilbraham, Eugene Fontaine and his wife, Joan of Feeding Hills, and Norman Robbins of Rock Hill, SC; his dear sister-in-law, Maureen Fontaine of Ludlow; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, numerous friends, Brother Deacons, and extended members of his family. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his step-father, Emile SanSoucie; his dear sister, Leona White and her husband, Ernest; his brother-in-law, Donald Fontaine; and his sister-in-law, Germaine Robbins. His funeral will be held on Monday morning, November 16, 2020 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107 (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial will follow the Mass at Saint Aloysius Cemetery, 1273 Berkshire Avenue, Indian Orchard, MA 01151. A walk-thru Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Perkins School for the Blind Library Division, 175 North Beacon Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
