Obituary

Ellen Reed Holloway - 44, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2020, at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts. Ellen struggled for years with various medical challenges and this time her body was just not strong enough to pull her through.

Ellen was born on October 28, 1976 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. Every time we drove past it as kids she would yell out, “Look, that’s my hospital!” I might have thought it was irritating at the time, but now it brings a teary smile to my face. Ellen’s most recent residence was Alton, New Hampshire where she lived happily with her husband and daughter for the past few years. She always had a zest for travel and new experiences, and lived in many places including the British Virgin Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, Key West, and California - as well as traveling to Paris and Germany with dear friends on an epic European trip. All that traveling aside, Ellen called Castine, Maine her hometown and it is where all of her cherished childhood memories and friends are.

Ellen attended Adams School in Castine, Maine from Kindergarten through 8th Grade and graduated from Bucksport High School in Bucksport, Maine in 1995. Ellen was an active member of 4-H where she enjoyed learning how to show and care for her goat, Nora, even winning a first place award with her. She was a member of the soccer team at BHS as well. Ellen attended Roger Williams University, the College of the Florida Keys, and EMTC. She loved to sail and spent time on the crew of the Schooner Bowdoin, taught sailing in Westport, CT, and worked at the Bitter End Yacht Club in Spanishtown, BVI. She worked in banking and the hospitality industry for most of her adult life, but without question her greatest accomplishment and biggest source of pride was in being a mom to her precious Emma.

Ellen always wanted to be a mom and Emma was such a blessing in her life. She took motherhood very seriously and cherished every moment with her little girl. Ellen loved cooking, good food, time with the people she loved most, and was a truly dedicated fan of both the Red Sox and the Patriots. Her knowledge and love of these teams was something that bonded her with her father and took on a life of its own over the years - so much so that she could usually impress even the biggest sports fans with her stats and info. Ellen’s relationship with her father was her most significant one before becoming a wife and a mother. Anyone in Castine at the time will remember the two of them doing everything together - usually while she sat on his shoulders long after she was too tall. Those of us who love her are able to find comfort knowing that she is with him now.

Ellen is preceded in death by her grandparents, Mary and Sherman Reed; brothers, Timothy and Wallace Reed; her mother, Elizabeth Serwetz Reed; and her beloved father, Wallace Reed. Ellen is survived by her husband, Jim Holloway and daughter, Emma Holloway; her mother, Sandra Reed; sister, Missy Young (Duston); siblings-in-law, Terrie Drum (Mike), Rexann Holloway (Elizabeth); much loved nieces and nephews, Shannen McLaughlin, Cassady Briley (Tim), Ashlyn Young, CJ and Payton Drum, Steve Heston (Debbie), Kim Skogan (Tyler); her doting aunt, Deanna Reed Peters; cousins, Neil Peters (Ramona), Katie Peters, Angela Serwetz, and Cameron Peters - as well as so many cherished friends across the globe.

Services for Ellen will be shared at a later date, likely Summer 2021. If you would like to make a donation to help Jim and Emma tackle the enormous hospital bills, you can do so using Venmo - @jimholloway11.

In the words of one of Ellen’s favorite artists, from one of her favorite songs, “Some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic, but I had a good life all the way.” (Jimmy Buffett, He Went to Paris)
