Obituary

CORNISH, ME - Edna departed from this world on October 12, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 5, 1924, the eldest of seven children, to Roy Francis and Irma (Waldron) Estabrook.

Edna married Howard Lincoln Carr, Jr. on October 10, 1943 and together they raised six children. During their married life they lived in many different places, finally settling in Cornish in 1960.

Howard (or Linc), worked at various jobs until they started the paper “Your Weekly Shopping Guide” in 1959. At that time, Edna had five children plus a two month old baby, and still managed to publish the then four page paper with just a typewriter and her hand lettering. This chronicle proved to be very popular in the area and grew to a substantial size until their retirement in 1983. Their eldest son, Howard L. III (or Skip), and wife, Kathleen took over the publication, and the third generation, their daughter, Laura, is running it today.

Edna and Linc moved to “Maple Hill Farm” in Cornish in 1968 after constructing a new home on the site. They raised sheep until Edna “discovered” Alpacas in 2004, and in her eighties opened and ran a small farm store and antique shop. She also loved and took great pride in the farm and her animals.

Not satisfied with retirement, Edna with Linc’s ever-willing help, bought and renovated two apartment houses, remodeled and began the present antique group shop “Cornish Trading Co.”, dismantled (with their youngest son Jon’s assistance) an antique cape in Harpswell, and rebuilt it on an oceanfront lot there.

Edna’s greatest joy was her family and being part of the many gatherings on holidays, birthdays, weddings, etc. She never missed sending a card to every child, in-law, grandchild, great grandchild and great-great grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband, Howard; parents, Roy and Irma; siblings, Raymond Estabrook, Alan Estabrook, Roy Estabrook Jr., Thelma Estabrook Beesley, and David Estabrook; an infant daughter, Mary Edna; a grandson, Matthew; and son-in-law Lincoln Gilman.

Edna is survived by her eldest son, Howard L. III, wife Kathleen and family; her four daughters, Linda, husband Jim Hanscom and family, Susan Gilman and family, Elizabeth, husband Jack Wadsworth and family, Barbara, husband Frank Bathe and family, youngest son Jon, his former wife Amber and family; a brother, Edward Estabrook and wife Iva; seventeen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren, and one on the way; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a “Celebration of Life” at a later date which will be announced by the family. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery in Topsham, Maine. Please, no flowers; if you wish you may contribute to a deserving charity in her memory. Cards may be sent to P. O. Box 86, Cornish, ME 04020.
