Arling W. Ryberg, 99, of Derry, NH, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 after a brief illness. Mr. Ryberg was born in Brockton, MA on February 14, 1907, a son of the late John and Alma Ryberg. He resided in Derry, with is his wife, Olive V. (Williamson) Ryberg, for 40 years. Mr. Ryberg was an Electrical Engineering Graduate of Wentworth Institute in Boston. When he was 16, Mr. Ryberg built his own automobile (without reverse as it was "not needed," which he told the officer later that year as he had to push it backward to the newly installed stop sign).
Mr. Ryberg’s career included being the first Vice President of Leer Aviation in Piqua, Ohio where he invented, and is named on the patent for, the “Automatic Clutch.” Later inventions for Leer Jets in Michigan would include his work on the "gyro." He also worked at Bell Labs, Singer Metrics, and finished his career at Sanders Associates in Nashua, NH. Additionally, he worked as a civilian employee for the United States government during both wartime and peace.
Mr. Ryberg is survived by his children: Lova Sherman Ferrara of Charlton, MA and William A. Ryberg of Ocean City, NJ. He is also remembered by his four granddaughters: Joanne Drogue of Naples, FL, Mura Bacon-Erikson of Wilbraham, MA, Deborah Gaarder of Windham, NH, and Brenda Byron of Tucson, AZ; three grandsons: Roland A. Sherman of Colchester, VT, William Ryberg of Tucson, AZ, and Shawn Ryberg of Ocean City, NJ; and his 15 great grandchildren, who knew him as "Poppy." He was predeceased by his wife, Olive, in 1996.
