Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Frederick D. Ackley, Sr., 93, of the Glenwood section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Monday, September 21, 2020. He passed into Eternal Life at Heritage Hall North in Agawam surrounded by all the memories he loved and cherished. He was born in the Woronoco Village of Russell, Massachusetts on May 6, 1927, a beloved son of the late Fred A. and Irene A. (Wellspeak) Ackley. He was raised in the Merrick section of West Springfield, graduated from West Springfield High School and moved to Springfield in 1948 where he lived the remainder of his life. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War and attained the rank of Hospital Mate Third Class. He was employed as a packer at the former U.S. Envelope, which later became Westvaco, in Springfield. He was a communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield and the former Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Chicopee. During his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marcella E. "Marci" (Jacques) Ackley who was Called Home on November 9, 2015. They were married on November 30, 1948 at the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 68 years of happiness together. He leaves his loving son and daughter-in-law, Frederick D. "Rick" Ackley, Jr. and his wife, Maria, of Springfield; his two cherished grandsons, Richard "Rich" Ackley and his wife, Jenn, of Wilbraham and Scott Ackley and his wife, Jill, of West Springfield; his seven cherished great-grandchildren, Hannah, Jacob, Breydan and Chase Ackley, Dylan Ackley and Rosemary and Bridget Fontaine; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members and friends. Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his two loving sons, Mark J. "Duke" Ackley who was Called Home on July 11, 2004 and James C. Ackley who was Called Home on October 1, 2006; and his eight dear brothers and sisters. His family will receive friends on Monday, September 28, 2020 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. which will be followed by a Prayer Service at 10 a.m. at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. His Committal Service with United States Navy Military Honors will follow the Prayer Service at Calvary Cemetery, 292 Hampden Street, Chicopee, MA 01013, (please note that masks are required, social distancing must be observed and funeral home capacity is limited due to state regulations).
