Obituary

Peter Gomes, 92, of New Bedford passed away Sunday September 20, 2020 after a long illness.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Pedro and Amelia Gomes, he lived in New Bedford for many years.

Peter was formerly employed as a merchant seaman and later as a roofer until his retirement.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was held as a prisoner of war. He was a member of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Association, the Merchant Mariners Club, the Bisca Tournament Club, the National Roofing Association, and the Fairhaven Veterans of Foreign Wars. Pete was also a proud volunteer at the New Bedford Fire Museum for many years.

He is survived by his sister, Theresa “Penny” Santos; his niece who was more like a daughter, Faith Silva and her husband Sonny; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was the brother of the late Aurora Santos, Julia Soares, Tanya Jenkins, Faith “Corday” Rivera, Manuel Gomes, and Emma Gomes, who passed away on September 17, 2020.

The visitation for Emmie and Pete will be held on Thursday Sept. 24th from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Due to occupancy limits at church, their Funeral Mass and burial will be private. Attendees must wear a mask and practice social distancing and avoid any close contact. Guests will be permitted to pay their respects and depart to allow the next guests to enter. Capacity at the funeral home will be limited so there could be wait times outside the funeral home.
