Obituary

Emma Gomes, 88, of New Bedford passed away Thursday September 17, 2020 after a long illness.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of the late Pedro and Amelia Gomes, she lived in New Bedford for the past 60 years.

She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.

Emmie was formerly employed at UMass Dartmouth until her retirement. She was actively involved in her union during her employment and was a strong supporter of the Cape Verdean Community, Toys for Tots, and many other charities.

She was a member of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Auxiliary, the Merchant Mariners Club, the Bisca Tournament Club, the NAACP, and the Keith Francis Scholarship Committee.

She is survived by her daughter, Faith Silva and her husband Sonny; her sister Theresa “Penny” Santos; four grandchildren, Necole Gomes, Damon Gomes and his wife Elizabeth, Antoinette Silva, and Corday Silva; six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was the sister of the late Aurora Santos, Julia Soares, Tanya Jenkins, Faith "Corday" Rivera, Manuel Gomes, and Peter Gomes, who passed away on September 20, 2020.

The visitation for Emmie and Pete will be held on Thursday Sept. 24th from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Due to occupancy limits at church, their Funeral Mass and burial will be private. Attendees must wear a mask and practice social distancing and avoid any close contact. Guests will be permitted to pay their respects and depart to allow the next guests to enter. Capacity at the funeral home will be limited so there could be wait times outside the funeral home.
