Hector J. Cini, of 81 Irving Street, Mystic, passed peacefully Thursday morning at his home with his wife at his side.
He was born in Stafford Springs on June 21, 1912 the son of Ivan and Mary (Fontanella) Cini. Raised in Stafford Springs, he attended St. Edwards Parochial School and graduated from Manchester Trade School. He later studied engineering at Perdue University, UCONN, and Connecticut College.
In 1940, Mr. Cini accepted a position in the Engineering Department at the Naval Underwater Sound Lab, where he worked for over 40 years before retiring in 1980. Of his many accomplishments, he was the first non-scientific recipient of the Decibal Award.
A well-known accomplished musician, he enjoyed playing the violin, saxophone, clarinet, and piano and had performed in several area bands. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening and also perfected the art of wine-making and teaching those skills to others. He was also a member of the Charity & Relief Lodge of Masons.
He was married to Agnes (Grippo) Cini in New London on January 14, 1951. Together they recently celebrated 55 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his siblings, Ezio Cini and June Squadrito of Mystic, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Attillo Cini.
His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Tuesday from 11-11:45am. A Funeral Service will follow at 12noon with Fr. Joseph Castaldi, Pastor of St. Joseph Church, New London will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New London.
