On Saturday, Sept. 12th, Barbara St. Cyr, devoted wife of Albert St. Cyr, passed away at the age of 88. Barbara was born on March 29, 1932 in Norwood MA to Philip and Beatrice (Donovan) Hawkes. She graduated, Valedictorian of Norwood High School Class of 1950. On September 1, 1951 she married her soulmate, Albert St. Cyr. They recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Barbara is survived by her husband Albert of Norwood, her son Philip St Cyr and his wife Beth of Sanford, ME, her daughter Deborah Caggiano and her husband Stephen of Canton, 4 grandchildren, Jeremy St Cyr of Somerville, Ben St Cyr and his husband Jason of Hollis ME, Lauren O’Malley and her husband Michael of Walpole, and Michael Caggiano and his fiancé Carrie Krieger of Brooklyn, NY. and six great grandchildren. Barbara enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, attending her class reunions, playing scrabble, and doing crossword puzzles. In Barbara’s own words about 10 years ago ….. “This is the story of the life of two people who were truly soul mates. They were as different as two people could possibly be. Yet, they belonged together. Now that I am in the twilight of my life, I can look back and realize how fortunate I am. Against all odds. I found him! We are the same age. We probably met at least a dozen times because we had some of the same friends and were in the same place so many times before we actually met. I even dated a boy who lived across the hall from him. We met at Bird and Son after I graduated from high school. He was a messenger boy and I worked in the office. I knew I had seen him before, but I did not remember where. I noticed how nice he was to everyone, not just the pretty young girls, but everyone, and I was attracted to him. We had our first date on August 26, 1950. We were married a year later. I had a scholarship to go to Bentley’s School of Accounting, but when he came along, I was afraid I would lose him if I spent all my time studying. Even though I had been class valedictorian. All my plans went out the window and because, if I ever had a brain, I used it by dating him, and I have never regretted it. We’ve had a wonderful life. Al became foreman at Mathewson Corp. He worked hard and they appreciated him. I became Controller at Tom Chevrolet. No one ever asked me if I had the education because I could do the work. We started out in one room due to the kindness of Al’s sister Blanche and ended up accomplishing all the things that were really important to us. We bought a house. We had a couple of cars and a little money in the bank. We had two wonderful children, both of whom we are very proud. We were able to give them the education we never had. They each had two amazing children. Each one so different. We were able to help with their education, too. How happy can two people be to create this wonderful family. Everyone has dreams and I know we have been truly blessed and I am thankful for everything. Due to the restrictions of Covid-19, a private burial service will be held at Knollwood Memorial Park.
