Obituary

WORCESTER-Betty I. (Kiewra) Gorczynski, 81, died Friday, February 24th in her home surrounded by her family. Her husband of 58 years, Theodore A. Gorczynski, 84, died hours later at the Meadows of Leicester where he had been recovering from an illness. They leave 2 sons, John A. and his wife Margo Gorczynski of Dudley, Ted A. and his wife Pong Ae Gorczynski of Destin, FL, a daughter, Carol A., wife of Gregory M. Nugent of Worcester, 4 grandchildren, Steven J. Gorczynski of Encinitas, CA, Nathan J. Gorczynski of Dudley, Jason R. Gorczynski of Ann Arbor, MI and Justin R. Gorczynski of Destin, FL, and many nephews and nieces. Their eldest son, Steven J. Gorczynski died in 1970. Mrs. Gorczynski leaves 2 sisters, Marion Fleurant of Auburn and Theresa, wife of Henry Kalinowski of Leicester. 3 brothers, Stanley, William and Alfred Kiewra and 2 sisters, Jane Veraitis and Josephine Waskiewicz predeceased her. Mr. Gorczynski was predeceased by a brother Nicholas and a sister Charlotte.

They were born in Worcester, Betty, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Kolenda) Kiewra and Theodore, the son of Julian and Viola (Siemionowicz) Gorczynski. They were graduates of St. Mary’s in Worcester and Commerce High School. Mr. Gorczynski was a graduate of the New England School of Accounting. Mrs. Gorczynski had worked for several years at the former Norton Company and later for Shaw’s at Webster Square. He had also worked at the Norton Company as an accountant for 32 years until retiring in 1982. Mr. Gorczynski was a World War II Army veteran, serving in Europe and saw action in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star he then joined the Army National Guard and retired as a captain in 1965. Mr. & Mrs. Gorczynski were both longtime and active members of the Polish American Veterans organization. He held leadership positions at local and state levels, serving as Commander for many years. Currently he served as the groups Chaplain, and his civic involvement earned him the Key to the City and many other honors and awards. Mrs. Gorczynski had held leadership positions for the Ladies Auxiliary on local and state levels and had served as its President for several years. Both were longtime and devoted members of Our Lady of Angels Church. She enjoyed entertaining and cooking for her family and friends, and especially enjoyed cheering people up by baking pies for them.

The funerals are Thursday, March 2nd from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main Street. Burials will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday, March 1st from 4:00 until 7:00 PM in the funeral home. Members of the Polish American Veterans will conduct a prayer service at 6:30 PM on Wednesday in the funeral home. The family requests that donations be made to the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice Program, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester, MA 01608.
